New Alden Mills
Point of Pines Fire Station
Construction of a new three bay, two-story fire station with community space, serving the Point of Pines area in the City of Revere on the site of the former Alden Mills Fire Station #2. The new station is slab-on-grade construction, totaling approximately 13,600 square feet. An elevated state highway is adjacent to the site with access ramps on each end. Because a section of the slope supporting the road was being removed to provide parking for the station, it was necessary to install an earth retention system before forming and pouring the permanent concrete retaining wall to support the road. Access to an active MBTA bus stop adjacent to the site had to be maintained during construction. The structural steel framing rests on concrete foundations formed on spread footings supported by rammed aggregate piers. A radiant floor heating system was installed in the structural slab and outside concrete apron. The building exterior is a combination of granite, brick and metal wall panels. Limited laydown area created challenges for steel erection and during the masonry phase of construction. The mechanical units and stand-by power generator are located on the membrane roof and concealed by a roof screen system. An outdoor roof deck is an added amenity for outdoor cooking and dining. Site improvements included a plaza area for the installation of a new firefighter memorial that included benches that were salvaged from the original station.
